Scientists fight back as politicians and big business dismiss empirical evidence for their own advantage.

Scientists have come under attack worldwide, as right wing movements disparage empirical research in favour of fantasy and self-serving accounts of such things as climate change. Remainers claim that Brexit adds to the pressure on scientists by ending vital international collaboration, while Brexiteers point to the fact that the jet engine, genetic science and penicillin were all pioneered by scientists who were working in isolation in the UK. Distain for science could be simply the mistrust of experts, but perhaps there is a fundamental rejection of reason and rationality under way. Can science survive the post-truth age?
